Adapting to the Elements: Early Start to Beat the Rain
Anticipating a high probability of showers and thunderstorms, the Steelers proactively shifted their practice schedule to a 10 a.m. start on Thursday. This adjustment allowed the team to complete their on-field work comfortably, avoiding potential disruptions from inclement weather. Coach Tomlin highlighted the importance of flexibility and preparedness in the face of changing circumstances, emphasizing that these qualities are essential components of football and team development.
We always try to have a hard core plan, but be light on our feet, said Coach Mike Tomlin. I just think that’s a component of football, and particularly team development. We went early today to beat the weather. I liked the energy and the preparedness that the guys showed, even with the change. Sometimes we get challenges, rain delays and so forth, and we still have to perform. And so that’s some of the messaging that went along with today’s work. I really appreciate the competitive spirit we have out here. We’ve got some guys who are learning what to do and getting to know each other, while at the same time being highly competitive. And you can’t run away from the competition in this game, particularly at this level.
7-Shots Drill: Defensive Edge over Offensive Efforts
The competitive 7-Shots drill saw mixed results, with the defense ultimately prevailing. Aaron Rodgers’ initial pass attempt to DK Metcalf was disrupted by Darius Slay, but the second attempt connected for a touchdown. Mason Rudolph also managed a touchdown pass to Robert Woods, but the defense held strong overall. Will Howard’s performance included a touchdown pass to Brandon Johnson, but an overthrow on the decisive play sealed the defense’s victory.
Here’s a breakdown of the key plays:
Rodgers to Metcalf (attempted): Broken up by Slay
Rodgers to Metcalf: Touchdown
Rodgers to Wilson: Incomplete
Rudolph to Woods: Touchdown
Rudolph to Woods: Incomplete
Howard to Johnson: Touchdown
Howard to Galbreath: Overthrow
The defense won with a final score of 4-3, showcasing their ability to disrupt key offensive plays and maintain tight coverage.
Key Observations: Standout Plays and Coaching Moments
During a 1-on-1 passing drill, Roman Wilson impressed with a contested catch over Joey Porter Jr., displaying excellent downfield capabilities. Patrick Queen intercepted a pass intended for Jaylen Warren, highlighting his defensive prowess. Additionally, Aaron Rodgers’ high standards for route precision were evident when wide receivers coach Zach Azzani quickly corrected a receiver’s error after a miscommunication on the field.
These observations underscore the importance of attention to detail and continuous improvement in the Steelers’ training camp. The coaching staff’s proactive approach to correcting errors and reinforcing correct techniques demonstrates a commitment to refining player skills and maximizing team performance.
Heightened Intensity: Chippiness and On-Field Interactions
Even in helmets and shells, Thursday’s practice was marked by notable chippiness and heightened intensity. New defensive acquisitions like Jalen Ramsey, Darius Slay, and Juan Thornhill brought an aggressive edge, challenging the offense. Interactions between players such as Jonnu Smith and Thornhill, as well as Calvin Austin III and DK Metcalf, added to the competitive atmosphere.
Coach Tomlin addressed the on-field interactions, stating, I prefer to keep some of that stuff in-house. I’d much rather say whoa than sic-em. This is a football team we’re putting together, but it’s also an opportunity to learn how to compete and compete the right way and be professional. But largely, how I handle those circumstances is our business. This approach emphasizes the balance between fostering a competitive environment and maintaining professionalism.
Friday Night Lights: Primetime Practice in Latrobe
The Steelers are set to practice at 7 p.m. in Latrobe for Friday Night Lights, an event anticipated by fans and team members alike. Coach Tomlin expressed appreciation for the welcoming environment in Latrobe and emphasized the developmental benefits of performing in a primetime setting. He noted that varying practice conditions mirror the unpredictable scheduling in the NFL, reinforcing the team’s adaptability.
We just appreciate the Welcome Wagon that we get up here in Latrobe, not only at Saint Vincent, but in this community, said Tomlin, and it’s an opportunity for us to show our appreciation, to perform in that different environment in primetime. It’s also a really good component of team development. You like to change the variables and circumstances in which we work, like we did today when we went early into in the morning. Tomorrow night, we’ll work in primetime, but oftentimes that mirrors scheduling. We play games in a variety of times in the National Football League, and regardless of when it’s time to go, it’s time to go. And so Friday Night Lights means a lot of things to us, and we’re really excited about getting to it.
Injury Update: Seumalo Returns, Knee Evaluations Underway
Coach Tomlin provided an injury update, noting that LG Isaac Seumalo has been taken off the NFI list and has begun working. However, DT Jacob Slade and DE Dean Lowry both sustained knee injuries that are currently being evaluated. Further information will be provided later. Got some guys working their way back to us and increasing their participation.
