NBA Lakers: JJ Redick Excited for LeBron James-Luka Dončić Season

The Los Angeles Lakers are heading into the 2025-26 NBA season with sky-high expectations, fueled by the star pairing of LeBron James and Luka Dončić. Head coach JJ Redick, fresh off a contract extension, is excited about the possibilities this season holds. With a fully committed star duo and intriguing new additions to the roster, the Lakers are aiming for championship contention. This article delves into Redick’s optimism, the commitment of James and Dončić, and the Lakers’ overall outlook for the upcoming season.

JJ Redick’s Contract Extension

General manager Rob Pelinka announced that JJ Redick received a contract extension this summer, marking a significant vote of confidence in the first-time head coach. Redick, 41, completed his first season with the Lakers, leading them to a 50-32 record and a third-place finish in the Western Conference. While they were eliminated in five games by the Minnesota Timberwolves, the organization sees Redick as a crucial part of their future.

“It’s not lost on me, the sort of rarity of a first-time head coach getting an extension,” Redick said. “Like, I recognize how fortunate I am to be with an organization that supports me that way.”

LeBron James’ Future with the Lakers

With Luka Dončić committed through 2028, the focus shifts to LeBron James, who is entering his 23rd professional season. At 40 years old, James’ future beyond the upcoming season is uncertain. However, Pelinka emphasized that the Lakers want James to continue his career with them if he chooses to play longer. The organization respects James’ decision and will allow him to determine his future.

“The first thing we want to do in terms of LeBron and his future is just give him the absolute respect to choose his story with his family in terms of how many years he’s going to continue to play,” Pelinka said. “He’s earned that right, and he’s the best one to talk about that in terms of how many years he’d like to play. … We would love if LeBron’s story would be to retire as a Laker.”

Redick’s Meetings with LeBron James

JJ Redick met with LeBron James twice during the summer, once in the Hamptons and again in Los Angeles. After these meetings, Redick is confident that James is mentally prepared for the upcoming season. Despite his age, James is still performing at a high level, averaging 24.4 points, 8.2 assists, and 7.8 rebounds last season.

“I came away from that thinking he’s in a great spot mentally and know he’s going to give us his absolute best,” Redick said.

Luka Dončić’s Commitment and Development

Luka Dončić has been a significant focus of the Lakers’ roster construction this offseason. The addition of center DeAndre Ayton provides Dončić with a much-needed partner in pick-and-roll scenarios. Dončić also dedicated his offseason to improving his physical fitness. His performance with Slovenia at the EuroBasket tournament showcased his progress, and he has committed to maintaining these improvements.

“I get the sense from talking to him all summer, spending time with him, not only just here but at the Backstreet Boys (concert in Las Vegas) is that this is his life now,” Redick said. “This is his routine. This is just a daily commitment to the new standard that he set for himself. … I expect the best version of Luka, and it’s my job as a coach to bring that out on a daily basis.”

Roster Flexibility and Future Plans

Luka Dončić is the only player with a confirmed contract past the 2026-27 season, giving the Lakers significant flexibility to make in-season changes if needed. Pelinka indicated that he would likely wait until at least 20 games have been played before considering any major moves. The Lakers are determined to maximize the partnership between Dončić and James and will explore all options to enhance their championship aspirations.

Championship Aspirations

Despite the uncertainties, the Lakers maintain their high expectations for the season. With a full offseason to integrate Dončić and James, the team is aiming for a championship run. Redick embraces the pressure that comes with coaching the Lakers and is focused on achieving excellence.

“I think there’s always pressure on the Lakers,” he said. “Coming into this building every day, you’re constantly reminded of what Lakers’ excellence is, so that doesn’t change, for me at least, year to year.”

The Lakers are entering the 2025-26 season with renewed optimism, driven by the star power of LeBron James and Luka Dončić, and the leadership of coach JJ Redick. With key players committed and strategic additions to the roster, the Lakers are poised to contend for a championship. The commitment of Dončić and the potential for James to continue his legacy with the Lakers create an exciting narrative for the season ahead. As Redick focuses on maximizing the team’s potential, the Lakers aim to meet the high expectations that come with the franchise’s storied history.
