From Fiery Pee-Wee to Budding Star
Before the accolades and the attention, Jordyn Tyson was a pint-sized powerhouse making waves in Texas youth football. Coach Brandon Tucker recalls a feisty, undersized player with a competitive edge that set him apart. Despite his small stature, Tyson’s aggression and willingness to mix it up quickly earned him a reputation as a player to watch.
Tucker recounts, ‘They said, ‘Hey, I got a player I want to bring out. He’s aggressive, he plays a little bit of linebacker. He likes to mix it up. He’ll fight. And they said, he’ll use some profanity as well.’ I told them, ‘Sounds like my type of guy.’ That’s how Jordyn started with me.’ This early experience instilled in Tyson a sense of toughness and determination that would serve him well throughout his career.
Even at a young age, Tyson’s versatility was evident. Initially playing linebacker and safety, he transitioned to wide receiver during a championship game when his team needed a spark. The result? Two quick touchdowns that showcased his natural talent and hinted at the star he would become.
High School Hurdles and Triumphs
Tyson’s high school career was marked by both challenges and triumphs. After reuniting with Coach Tucker at John Paul II High School, he faced stiff competition on a team brimming with Division I talent. Despite his obvious potential, Tyson spent his freshman year on junior varsity, a testament to the depth of talent around him.
Tucker remembers, ‘He was just constantly making plays. He should have been on varsity. I think our mindset at the time was let him play and compete, versus having him kind of stand around in a backup role. But he was just phenomenal.’ Tyson’s perseverance paid off when he transferred to Allen High School, where he exploded onto the scene as a senior.
In 2022, Tyson amassed 1,294 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns, solidifying his status as a top prospect. ‘Once he sprouted, it was game over,’ Tucker said. ‘He absolutely destroyed the Metroplex. He turned into who you see today.’ This breakout season catapulted Tyson into the college football spotlight.
Making Waves at Arizona State
Jordyn Tyson’s arrival at Arizona State brought an immediate impact. His exceptional athleticism and competitive drive quickly made him a favorite target for the Sun Devil quarterbacks. By 2025, Tyson was leading the team in receiving yards and touchdowns, establishing himself as a key player in the ASU offense.
Quarterback Sam Leavitt praised Tyson’s growth, stating that he’s a number one wide receiver, and he is always looking for ways to improve his game, making him a great asset to the team.
His on-field success has also translated into a leadership role. Tyson was selected as a member of the Pat Tillman Leadership Council, a testament to his character and influence within the team. Despite not being the most vocal player, Tyson leads by example, inspiring his teammates with his work ethic and dedication.
The Tyson Brothers: A Bond Forged in Competition
The competitive fire that burns within Jordyn Tyson was ignited at a young age, thanks in large part to his relationship with his older brother, Jaylon. Just 20 months apart, the Tyson brothers engaged in countless battles on the basketball court and the football field, pushing each other to excel.
John Tyson, their father, explains, ‘Jaylon was always what Jordyn needed, and Jordyn was always what Jaylon needed. On the basketball court, Jaylon needed to be able to get past those smaller guys. He needed to be able to have a handle. Jordyn needed to be able to catch balls over a taller guy. You see him out there, he catches 50-50 balls extremely well. It’s because his brother, going against him every day, he had to be able to go up and go get it. They were always each other’s best gift.’
Even as Jaylon pursued a career in the NBA (as a first-round pick by the Cleveland Cavaliers), the brothers continued to challenge each other. This constant competition molded Jordyn into the resilient and determined athlete he is today.
NFL Dreams on the Horizon
As Jordyn Tyson continues to excel at Arizona State, NFL scouts and analysts are taking notice. Many project him to be a first-round pick in the upcoming NFL Draft, citing his exceptional speed, agility, and ball-catching skills. Tyson’s ability to make contested catches and create separation from defenders makes him a highly coveted prospect.
While the allure of the NFL is undeniable, the Tyson family remains focused on the present. ‘It’s another opportunity for him to cement his place in the college football world,’ John Tyson said. ‘He loves Arizona State. He wants to cement Arizona State as one of those programs people want to come to. So everything he does is to make sure Arizona State is good. We don’t care about the NFL. That will happen when it happens. We’re worried about taking care of business between these lines right now.’
Regardless of when or where he lands in the NFL, Jordyn Tyson is poised to make a significant impact on the sport. His journey from a scrawny Pee-Wee player to a potential NFL star is a testament to his unwavering commitment and the support of those around him.
