Beyond the Resort: Unmissable Things to Do in Curacao

Curaçao, the dazzling Dutch Caribbean island, beckons with more than just its luxurious resorts. While lounging by the pool has its appeal, venture beyond the tourist hubs and uncover the island’s true essence. From hidden cove beaches to the colorful architecture of Willemstad, Curaçao promises a rich tapestry of experiences for the intrepid traveler. This guide unveils the best things to do in Curaçao that aren’t at the resort, ensuring an unforgettable adventure.

This island offers a surprising range of attractions beyond the picturesque beaches and translucent waters it is most commonly celebrated for; a variety of hikes reward climbers with dazzling views at golden-hour, traditional bakeries hiding in plain sight and peddling classic and nouveau pastries, and countless rows of brightly painted homes and buildings embodying one of the most locally beloved architectural traditions in the Caribbean—you simply need to get out and explore it.

Before You Go

Planning your Curaçao adventure? Here are a few essential tips to ensure a smooth and enjoyable trip:

  • Need to know: All foreign visitors to Curacao must fill in a Digital Immigration Card up to seven days before entry.
  • Money smarts: As of March 2025, Curacao’s official currency is now the Caribbean Guilder, but credit cards and US dollars are accepted at most tourism businesses.
  • Getting around: A rental car for at least a day is the best bet here. While there are many economical and models to choose from, 4-wheel-drive vehicles are best for the arid outback regions, and after a rare rain, conditions can become very slippery.

Where to Stay

Choosing the right accommodation is key to experiencing Curaçao beyond the resort. Here are a few recommendations:

  • Mondi Lodge: You will need a car to stay at this eco-friendly oasis near the little fishing village of St. Michael—though it’s not as remote as it seems, as there is a small town with modern stores nearby for supplies. The hotel is an ideal nature-focused sanctuary comprising six little thatched cottages, palapas, off the owner’s family farm.
  • Wynwood Boutique Hotel: Embedded right in the middle of Pietermaai, this bright pink boutique stay blends into the colorful palette of the district that’s inspired by the brightly colored buildings of the Handelskade.
  • Avila Beach Hotel: Celebrating its 76th anniversary in 2025, this is the island’s oldest operational hotel and the place where Dutch royalty always stay when they visit.

Two Resort-Free Days in Curacao: Day 1

Get ready for an exciting exploration of Curaçao’s culture and attractions!

Morning: Do the Willemstad Walkabout

  • Start early in the courtyard at City Beach 88 to fuel up on Dutch pannenkoeken at Dudok Patisserie; they truly are different from US-style flapjacks.
  • Then, meet up with the Free Walking Tour Curaçao at 9:30 a.m. (Book ahead online.) This is the best way to get the lowdown on all of the stunning, outdoor artistic and architectural marvels spanning both sides of downtown, including the famous, swinging old lady (formally known as the Queen Emma floating bridge) that connects the two colorful neighborhoods.
  • Afterward, duck into an air-conditioned attraction like the Kura Hulanda Museum to cool off before finding Marshe Bieu, Plasa Bieu, to join the locals for a typical Curacaoan lunch like seafood soup, fried fish, and rice, or goat stew and polenta-like funchi from a variety of no-frills stalls.

Afternoon: Head to Mambo Beach

  • To fully cool off, head to this awesome urban beach a mere 10-minute drive from downtown. Mambo Beach Boulevard is far more than a stellar strip of white sand with clear aqua waters and surprisingly good snorkeling.
  • While there, you should also visit the Curacao Sea Aquarium at the far end of their beach.

Evening: Find Curacao’s food truck culture all in one spot

  • Enjoy dinner at Mambo but save room for late-night munchies and dessert at BBQ Express nearby.

Two Resort-Free Days in Curacao: Day 2

Continue your Curaçao adventure with outdoor activities and local flavors.

Morning: Take a hike or a safari

  • If conquering challenging peaks is your thing, leave early in the morning to climb Mt. Christoffel in the eponymous national park.
  • But an ideal way to get up close to the local flora and fauna without too much exertion is via a Jeep safari with a CARMABI park ranger.

Afternoon: Go beach hopping or snorkeling (or both)

  • For sea-loving first-timers, I highly recommend a Sailing charter to reach the best far-flung spots and see where you’d like to return on your own.
  • While seeking out the best beaches on your own, like Playa Porto Marie with its cool double reef and resident wild pigs, stop at the tiny village of St. Willibrordus, better known as Williwood (Look for the Hollywood-style sign announcing it.)
  • Alternately, immerse yourself in those enticingly clear waves during a snorkel cruise. There are many choices of routes and operators, but my favorite is the Miss Ann Boat Trips trip to the sunken tugboat in Spanish Waters.

Evening: Dine over the harbor atop a legendary fortress

  • But you can’t leave the country without dining atop Fort Nassau Restaurant, which was purposely perched on a hill to afford the city’s best defense.

If You Have Three Days

Add a visit to Landhuis Bloemhof, a vibrant shock of nature, art, and culture set in an old, colonial estate.

If You Have Four Days, Plus

  • Take a boat ride to Klein Curacao—a semi-deserted island just off the country’s main island
  • If you have an afternoon flight home, you can kick off your last day with another Curacao-exclusive experience that’s a mere five-minute drive from the airport: a 45-minute guided tour of the incredible ancient caverns at Hato Caves.

Conclusion

Curaçao offers a wealth of experiences beyond the confines of its resorts. From exploring the colorful streets of Willemstad to discovering hidden beaches and indulging in local cuisine, this Dutch Caribbean island promises an adventure for every traveler. By venturing beyond the resort, you’ll uncover the true heart and soul of Curaçao, creating memories that will last a lifetime. So, pack your bags, rent a car, and get ready to explore the dushi side of Curaçao!
