The Annecy International Animation Film Festival was abuzz with excitement as Cartoon Network Studios (CNS), Warner Bros. Animation (WBA), and Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe showcased their latest projects. Among the highlights was the unveiling of ‘Steven Universe: Lars of the Stars,’ a highly anticipated spin-off that promises to expand the beloved ‘Steven Universe’ universe. This new series, along with updates on fan favorites like ‘Regular Show,’ ‘Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends,’ ‘Adventure Time,’ and ‘Gumball,’ underscored the studios’ commitment to innovation and creativity.
The presentation offered a blend of nostalgia and fresh perspectives, with legendary creators taking center stage to share their visions for the future of animation. From Rebecca Sugar’s return to the ‘Steven Universe’ world to J.G. Quintel’s secretive new ‘Regular Show’ series, the event was packed with noteworthy announcements. This article delves into the key reveals from the studio focus, providing an in-depth look at what fans can expect from these iconic animation powerhouses in the coming years.
‘Steven Universe: Lars of the Stars’: A New Chapter
Rebecca Sugar, the creator of the original ‘Steven Universe,’ announced the development of ‘Steven Universe: Lars of the Stars’ for Prime Video. This spin-off will focus on the character Lars Barriga, described as an ‘eternal teenager and space outlaw.’ The series follows Lars and his pirate crew as they navigate the cosmos, smuggling contraband, evading authorities, and uncovering the dark secrets of the fallen Gem Empire. The announcement was met with thunderous applause, signaling the fervent anticipation for this new chapter in the ‘Steven Universe’ saga.
The original ‘Steven Universe,’ which ran from 2013 to 2020, garnered critical acclaim for its storytelling, diversity, and emotional depth, even earning a Peabody Award. ‘Steven Universe: Lars of the Stars’ aims to build on this legacy, delving deeper into the lore of the series and exploring the past, present, and future of its universe. With Sugar and Ian Jones-Quartey at the helm, the spin-off promises to deliver the same level of creativity and emotional resonance that captivated audiences the first time around.
‘Teen Titans Go!’ Returns for a Milestone Tenth Season
In addition to the ‘Steven Universe’ news, it was revealed that ‘Teen Titans Go!,’ the longest-running animated series in DC history, has been renewed for a tenth season on Cartoon Network. The irreverent comedy continues to follow Robin, Starfire, Cyborg, Beast Boy, and Raven as they balance crime-fighting with the everyday absurdities of teenage life. Executive producers Luke Cormican, Peggy Regan, and Sam Register are set to return for this milestone season.
The show’s enduring popularity lies in its ability to blend superhero action with comedic elements that appeal to a wide audience. The renewal of ‘Teen Titans Go!’ highlights Cartoon Network’s commitment to providing diverse content that resonates with both younger and older viewers. With a tenth season on the horizon, fans can look forward to more of the quirky adventures and humorous escapades that have made the series a hit.

Celebrating 25 Years of Cartoon Network Studios
This year’s Cartoon Network Studios presentation took a different approach, emphasizing the talent behind the animation. The company’s legendary creators were in town to celebrate 25 years of CNS. Rather than a rapid-fire look at the studio’s pipeline, the presentation allowed the creators to share their insights and visions.
This approach highlighted the studio’s dedication to fostering creativity and supporting the artists who bring these stories to life. The focus on talent underscored the importance of individual voices in shaping the landscape of modern animation. As CNS looks to the future, its commitment to empowering creators ensures a continued stream of innovative and engaging content.
‘Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake’ Season 2 Explores New Worlds
Before the ‘Steven Universe’ announcement, Rebecca Sugar performed a new original song written for the second season of the ‘Adventure Time’ spin-off, ‘Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake.’ Producer and showrunner Adam Muto offered an early look at Season 2, revealing that it will take place more in Fionna’s world and less in Ooo. Huntress Wizzard is also set to have an expanded role.
Muto explained, ‘This time, we wanted to keep most of the adventures in Fiona’s world… And I thought that would make it more normal, but it’s still pretty strange… And that’s kind of baked into ‘Adventure Time’ DNA.’ The decision to focus on Fionna’s world promises fresh and exciting storylines, while still retaining the quirky and imaginative elements that define the ‘Adventure Time’ universe.
Sugar also recalled being asked by Muto to write a song for Simon Petrikov, which would show that, while happy to have regained his sanity, he also misses being the Ice King in Ooo. The song, titled ‘Part of the Madness,’ resonated deeply with Sugar, who expressed that it mirrored her own feelings about missing the world and characters she had created.
J.G. Quintel Teases New ‘Regular Show’ Series
J.G. Quintel, the creator of ‘Regular Show,’ teased his new series, keeping most details, including the title, a closely guarded secret. Quintel did share artwork of new designs from the show, but he only flipped through a slideshow of cartoon food products, each of which got a round of applause.
Quintel was more forthcoming about ‘Super Mutant Magic Academy,’ the upcoming YA animated series based on the comic by Jillian Tamaki. Artwork and an animatic were shown, giving the impression that the show will land somewhere between ‘X-Men’ and ‘Harry Potter.’ Quintel explained, ‘I try really hard to find people through comics… Back in 2015, I found this comic called ‘Super Mutant Magic Academy’ by Jillian Tamaki… I met her and said, ‘You should make this into a show,’ and she said, ‘I can’t, but maybe if you did it.’ I told her I would remember that, and literally seven years later I called her when I got a development deal at [the studio].’
Craig McCracken’s ‘Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends’ Reboot
Cartoon legend Craig McCracken shared an early look at his upcoming preschool adaptation of ‘Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends.’ McCracken insisted it would not necessarily be educational or aspirational, prioritizing humor above all else. One rule during production was ‘Laughs over Lectures,’ stressing that the show is meant to be entertainment first and foremost.
In a brief animatic clip, Bloo taught the invisible friends around him that the day’s lesson was to never ever ever ever ever trust adults, because they will make you do things like eat broccoli. McCracken explained, ‘It’s almost like a cartoon parody of a preschool show.’
‘The Wonderfully Weird World of Gumball’ Returns
CNS executive producer Ben Bocquelet handled the presentation for ‘The Wonderfully Weird World of Gumball’ – note the new name. Produced by Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe, the new series is essentially a seventh season of the original show in tone, aesthetic, and even in some of the crew working on it. A clip was shown that could just as easily have come from the series’ original run, ensuring that fans of Gumball, Darwin, and their quirky friends, family, and acquaintances will enjoy the show’s return.
The Annecy International Animation Film Festival provided a captivating glimpse into the future of animation, with Cartoon Network Studios, Warner Bros. Animation, and Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe leading the charge. From the highly anticipated ‘Steven Universe: Lars of the Stars’ spin-off to the return of beloved series like ‘Teen Titans Go!,’ ‘Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake,’ ‘Regular Show,’ ‘Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends,’ and ‘The Wonderfully Weird World of Gumball,’ the event showcased a diverse range of projects that promise to delight audiences of all ages.
The emphasis on talent and creative vision, combined with a commitment to innovation and storytelling, positions these studios at the forefront of the animation industry.
